<video_title>The Social Brain on Screens (#AtE)</video_title>
<video_description>The “social brain” refers to the network of brain regions behind complex social interactions, including perspective-taking, emotion regulation, and joint attention, among other basic and complex skills. How does digital media engagement impact the social brain in early childhood, adolescence, and beyond? In this “Ask the Experts” webinar, an interdisciplinary panel of neuroscientists, developmental psychologists, and psychiatrists explore the functions of the social brain in childhood, what these interconnected neural networks require for healthy functioning, and what strategies parents might consider around infant and youth screen use to promote healthy social development.

[00:00] Introduction
Kris Perry, MSW, Executive Director of Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development, introduces the webinar and panel moderator Moriah Thomason, PhD,
Barakett Associate Professor, Director of Pediatric Neuroimaging and Vice Chair for Research in the Departments of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Population Health, New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Moriah provides an overview of “social brain” development from infancy through adolescence before introducing the panelists.

[08:06] Georgene Troseth, PhD
Georgene Troseth, PhD, Professor of Psychology at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University, discusses the relationship between screen use and social development in early childhood. She explains how early digital media use can negatively impact social skills through the displacement of essential face-to-face interactions and real-world explorations, but also enhance close relationships at a distance, as in video chatting. When considering screen use limits, she recommends parents and caretakers think of the “three Cs” of media use – content, context, and child – and provides examples of how each can be used to determine when and how digital media might support early social development.
