For children with complex developmental and behavioral needs, stability and routine can make all the difference. However, life is full of change – big and small – and that can leave families feeling as though maintaining consistent support is nearly impossible.
When Amelia was first referred to the Mental Health Navigator program, she was living with her grandmother, Elizabeth, and experiencing behavioral challenges that made daily routines and school success difficult. Through the program, Amelia and her family were connected with Shelby as their dedicated Navigator. Amelia soon received an Autism diagnosis and was placed at Royal Palm School.
This marked the beginning of a journey that would involve multiple transitions and challenges, with Shelby alongside Amelia offering continuous support to meet her evolving needs.
Building Stability During Transitions
From the start, Shelby worked closely with Amelia’s grandmother to strengthen her day-to-day routine and connect the family to effective developmental support. This included coordinating therapeutic services to address behavioral and emotional needs and enrolling Amelia in an enrichment program at The Little Gym to encourage socialization and confidence-building.
During this time, the family experienced the devastating loss of her brother. This profound period of grief coincided with another major transition when custody of Amelia shifted to her father in Naples. Shelby ensured continuity of care during this change, guiding the family through school enrollment in the Collier County Public School System, securing ABA therapy services, and connecting Amelia with grief counseling through Valerie’s House. She also arranged equine therapy at the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center, providing Amelia with additional emotional and developmental support.
With coordinated care in place, Amelia adjusted remarkably well. Behavioral concerns decreased, and she successfully transitioned into three general education classes, demonstrating meaningful academic and social progress.
When Amelia’s father later relocated to Utah, custody returned to her mother, Nadine, in Fort Myers, who lived with Grandmother Elizabeth. Shelby again stepped in to help the family navigate another period of transition. She assisted with re-enrollment in the Lee County School District and personally attended meetings with Nadine to ensure a smooth placement process. Shelby also helped reinstate Medicaid coverage following the move, connected the family with food assistance resources, coordinated medical and dental appointments, and ensured Amelia could continue participating in her beloved extracurricular activities, like dance lessons, during a time of financial hardship.
Thriving with Continued Support
Today, Amelia is attending a mainstream elementary school in a smaller classroom environment where she is excelling both academically and behaviorally. She is steadily integrating into general education classes, stays active in after-school activities, and participates in ongoing mental health therapy.
Despite multiple transitions, Amelia’s journey reflects what becomes possible when families receive consistent guidance and coordinated care. With the right support in place, her family gained stability, confidence, and access to community resources to help Amelia grow and succeed.
