When Eddie, an 8-year-old non-verbal child on the autism spectrum, was referred to the Mental Health Navigator program at Kids’ Minds Matter in October 2024, his mother had been advocating tirelessly on his behalf for years. A healthcare administrator by profession, she was no stranger to navigating complex systems. Yet, despite her persistence, she encountered constant barriers, from insurance limitations to income-related restrictions and eligibility gaps, that kept Eddie from receiving the vital support he needed.
The frustration weighed heavily on Eddie’s mom. At times, she even questioned if she should leave her job just so Eddie could qualify for assistance. However, after being paired with a dedicated Mental Health Navigator, she found someone to walk alongside her in finding support for Eddie. Together, they would keep pushing forward – she was not alone.
Finding Safe Support for the Whole Family
While locating educational and therapeutic support for Eddie, another priority for his Navigator was addressing Eddie’s safety. Children with autism are at a significantly higher risk of drowning, especially those in Florida. In fact, 57% of all drownings in Florida since 2021 involving a child age five or older were children with autism.
Understanding this, the family’s Navigator helped Eddie access swim scholarships, allowing him to develop lifesaving skills while also benefiting from the therapeutic aspects of swimming thanks to Terri Ballow, President of Florida Drowning Prevention Foundation, who assisted in connecting the family to this to these classes.
Additionally, their Navigator recognized that Eddie’s mom needed support of her own. She was connected with a therapist who helps ensure that, while she cares for Eddie, she also cares for herself.
Opening New Doors for Eddie
The persistence of Eddie’s mom and his Navigator led to life-changing opportunities. Together, they applied for and secured the Step Up for Students Unique Abilities Scholarship, expanding Eddie’s access to specialized education and therapies.
In another significant life milestone, Eddie was recently accepted into a new charter school in Naples, Florida, specifically designed for children on the autism spectrum. Eddie now has the chance to learn and grow in an environment built to help him thrive.
Thankful for the support she and Eddie received, his mom sent a heartfelt message to his Navigator this past May:
“Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you so much for helping me through this process and tough times. I don’t think I could’ve done this without you.”
Eddie’s Journey Forward
Eddie’s story is one of resilience, partnership, and hope. What began as a series of roadblocks transformed into a path of progress thanks to the dedicated Navigators in the Mental Health Navigator program. While challenges remain, Eddie and his mom now have access to tools, education, and community resources that will help continue to grow.
This shows what’s possible when families are met with compassion and advocacy – and when a community stands behind them. At Kids’ Minds Matter, this is made possible by our community partners and generous donors, whose support ensures every child can access the right care in the right place, at the right time.
