“Stephanie” Finds Stability, Support & a Path Forward

When a child struggles with complex mental health needs, families can quickly feel overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. For “Stephanie”, a pre-teen experiencing self-harm, repeated Baker Act admissions, elopement (leaving a healthcare setting without authorization), and escalating behavior, her parents were navigating crisis after crisis without a clear diagnosis or plan of care. They knew their daughter needed help, but the path forward felt confusing and out of reach.

“Stephanie” was referred to the Mental Health Navigator program, where she and her family were connected with a dedicated navigator who helped them make sense of their options and find the right support.

Creating Clarity Through Coordinated Care

When “Stephanie” entered the Mental Health Navigator program, she had a provisional bipolar diagnosis, a significant history of trauma, and no established treatment plan. Her family faced multiple barriers to care, including inconsistent services, limited understanding of “Stephanie’s” needs, language challenges, and gaps in mental health and parenting support education.

The Mental Health Navigator partnered closely with the family, offering guidance without judgment and helping them manage a complex health system. Their Navigator connected “Stephanie” with care providers at Golisano Children’s Hospital for a comprehensive evaluation. Through this process, clinicians identified intellectual and severe language disorders, along with mood- and trauma-related conditions, providing the clarity needed to develop an effective, individualized care plan.

“Stephanie’s” parents were connected to resources, support groups, and educational classes to better understand their daughter’s mental health. With this additional guidance, her parents gained essential tools and confidence to support “Stephanie’s” emotional and behavioral needs.

Progress & Renewed Hope

Since entering the Mental Health Navigator program, “Stephanie” has made meaningful progress. Over the last two semesters at an alternative school, she has experienced no incidents of self-harm or major behavioral concerns. She now receives targeted academic and social-emotional support and is on track to transition to a less restrictive educational setting.

Furthermore, her parents have discovered that they are not alone. They are informed, supported, and empowered – able to advocate for their daughter and confidently navigate her care moving forward.
