For families navigating the complexities of mental health, wraparound support can make all the difference.
One family of six found that support through the care of their dedicated Mental Health Navigator, Myranda. She worked closely with the parents after their 12-year-old son exhibited increasingly aggressive behaviors at school. Referred by the Collier County School District, the young man would soon transition to a new middle school, where they had limited knowledge of his needs. The family was worried about how he would be received and supported.
Proactive Support for a Smooth Transition
Myranda took early, thoughtful steps to connect the family with the new school, ensuring the student felt comfortable and supported from day one. This collaboration enabled trust to be built between the parents and school staff, creating a unified approach that prioritized the student’s academic and emotional success.
Recognizing his parents’ preference for informal guidance over formal classes, Myranda engaged in personalized conversations to help them gain a deeper understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) along with anxiety. This empowered his parents to confidently advocate and support their child’s unique needs at school and within the community.
Comprehensive Advocacy & Care
Beyond the school setting, Myranda regularly attended the child’s psychiatric appointments, serving as a bridge between the family and healthcare providers. By sharing insights from both school and home, Myranda provided valuable information that helped establish a stable medication plan and ensured the child’s needs were understood by all care providers.
Myranda also guided the family through the development and implementation of his Individualized Education Program (IEP), explaining the process in easily understood, practical terms. She coordinated regular ‘team’ meetings to celebrate his progress, address any challenges, and ensure everyone from the family to his school to his providers remained informed and aligned on his care.
Additionally, Myranda recognized the emotional strain this and other challenges had on the parents. She connected them with their own counseling resources and facilitated a needed neurology referral, ensuring the family had access to comprehensive care.
A Holiday Season Filled With Joy
The holidays can also be especially challenging for families managing multiple health needs. Last Christmas, Myranda helped the family navigate available community resources after it was brought to her attention that children over age 12 typically do not qualify for gift programs in Collier County.
Myranda went above and beyond, supported by generous local partners who ensured that all four children had the opportunity to experience the joy of the holiday season. For this family, it was more than gifts – it was a moment of hope and happiness after a stressful year.
Together, We’re Creating Brighter Futures
Thanks to Myranda’s consistent guidance and advocacy, the child now thrives in an educational environment that meets both his academic and behavioral needs. The communication between the family and the school remains open and productive, and the student has made remarkable progress in his grades and attendance.
Myranda’s story highlights the life-changing impact of the Mental Health Navigator program. Through compassionate guidance, advocacy, and proactive support, these navigators help children and their families overcome challenges, ensuring that mental healthcare is accessible, holistic, and empowering.
