For children facing trauma and emotional challenges, early intervention and coordinated support can be life-changing. One young student at Pine Island Elementary School in Bokeelia found much-needed support with the guidance of dedicated Mental Health Navigator Leslie.
The young student was experiencing socio-emotional difficulties, attachment challenges, and trauma symptoms. Concerned, the school referred the family to the Mental Health Navigator Program through Kids’ Minds Matter at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Supporting the Whole Family
From the beginning, Leslie partnered with the family to identify and overcome any barriers to care. Leslie helped the family navigate obstacles related to insurance and transportation, connecting them with free, in-home therapy from Kids’ Minds Matter therapist Tatiana Gorospe. The young student learned mindfulness practices and calming techniques, and the entire family benefited from parent-child interaction strategies. Over the course of treatment, the child demonstrated improvements in both mood and behavior, with feelings of sadness and anxiety decreasing, mood swings and tantrums becoming less frequent, and emotional resilience growing.
At school, the young student continues to receive socio-emotional support and academic assistance, reinforcing the progress being made at home. This coordinated approach to care ensured the child felt supported, understood, and safe across all environments.
Recognizing that long-term success depends on caregiver support, Leslie ensured the parents had access to critical education and resources. The parents recently completed the “Parenting the Exceptional Child” classes and participated in monthly coordination meetings. Beyond mental health services, Leslie helped the family access vital community resources for essential items like food, clothing, and healthcare. Today, the family feels empowered to independently navigate toward long-term stability thanks to these community support systems.
